In October, we faced a crisis in our district. As a community, parents and staff came together in the face of the devastating news and strengthened our commitment to our students. Dartmouth Middle School staff and parents joined together with staff and parents throughout the district to support students, support each other, and support the strong bond between our schools and our community. The staffs at Alta Vista, Carlton, the District Office, Guadalupe, Lietz, Noddin, Oster and Union Middle School sent encouraging messages of support, delivered gift baskets, and supervised break and duties at Dartmouth so the staff could support one another. Everyone came together as a USD Family, cared for each other, and leaned on each other through this time of crisis.
On October 23, we gathered with parents and community members along with members of the San Jose Police Department and the District Attorney’s Office to discuss how we can work together, and do more together, to support our children. The ideas and resources shared included the District’s work with Common Sense Media and My Digital TAT2, in which students and parents gain valuable knowledge about online communication and internet safety. We have new sessions scheduled for parents in the next month and encourage all interested parents to attend. After sessions we hosted last year, parents left with a multitude of resources and information about the issues around their children’s use of the internet and social media.

During times like these, it is important to pause and take a moment to realize what amazing students, parents, staff and community members we have in our district. We have so much to be proud of and so much to be thankful for. As families gather during the months of November and December to celebrate the holidays, it is the perfect time to reflect, to show our children and each other how much we care, and to appreciate all the wonderful things about our amazing community.
