About Noddin

Quick Facts:
Principal: Eric Scharer
Grades: K-5
Total Students: Approximately 650
Ralph E. Noddin Elementary was recognized in 1997 and 2008 as a California Distinguished School and in 1999 and as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence and in 2011 we were awarded by Project Cornerstone of Santa Clara County as the "Elementary Caring School Community" recipient. Ralph C. Noddin was established in 1961 and is located in a scenic neighborhood setting in southwest San Jose, bordering Los Gatos in the heart of Silicon Valley. Our approximate 650 students are in twenty-six heterogeneous regular education classrooms with one special education classroom.
Noddin's population draws from both single and two parent households. In two parent households, it is common for both parents to work due to the high cost of living in the Silicon Valley. Regardless of socioeconomic levels, the staff and community are committed to work in partnership to provide a positive educational environment and daily success for all students. Excellence in education is the standard and mutual respect is expected. With a focus on literacy, early interventions and extensions exist through our Response to Instruction Program in Grades Kindergarten through Fifth Grades.
At Noddin, we emphasize service to self, service to others, and service to our community.  Our children learn from example.  Nodin is a PeaceBuilders school.  PeaceBuilders is a character education program that instills attributes such as honesty, taking responsibility for all actions, and being good caretakers of our environment.  Noddin is also a "Go Green School" and has been in partnership with the City of San Jose to promote recycling in and outside of the classroom.  The entire community participates!

Noddin's welcoming atmosphere, where we all work together on 'what's good for kids' really shows in our school.  We are proud of our diverse student population.  We value diversity and contributions by our Noddin family and community-culturally, linguistically, and ethnically. Among the sixteen languages spoken by our families, Spanish, Vietnamese, Farsi, and Korean are predominate. Other languages spoken include Russian, Chinese, Italian, and Tagalog. Noddin is a wonderful mosaic in which we value all the pieces that create our 'family'. We welcome the interaction of students' history, culture, and experiences that enrich the learning environment and make everyone feel valued. Everyone's involvement forms an enduring partnership of a warm, caring community.

Noddin's motto, daily success for all, inspires and directs our changes and improvements. The staff and school community expects excellence; that is why we exist. With an administrative open door policy, families know their concerns and ideas are received as important. Parents, grandparents, and caregivers are welcome as collaborative partners and are essential to our school. We believe in keeping the lines of communication open. Our bi-weekly publication of the 'Noddin Newsletter', distributed in the Thursday Envelopes keep our families up to date on Home and School Club Events, minimum days, and other important information. Also, the District Website at is another invaluable way to keep "up to date" on all of the District and individual school activities.  In addition, teachers are available during instruction time by voice mail only, or e-mail, and always by appointment.

We continually evaluate the curriculum, school climate, and goals. Our community involves itself in groups such as School Site Council, Safe School Planning Committee, Parent Advisory Groups, Student Council, Principal Leadership Team, Home and School Club, and the Technology Committee.
Our daily schedule is 8:05 am to 2:30 pm except for Wednesday's when students are dismissed at 1:05 pm. This gives the teachers an opportunity to work together with their grade level team, plan curriculum, and share ideas.  This time is invaluable for Professional Development.

Parent involvement is encouraged and appreciated but doesn't always mean having to come in during school hours. There are many ways in which parents can participate either on campus or by working on projects or correcting papers at home. If you would like to lend a helping hand, check with your child's teacher or get involved in our very active and wonderful Home and School Club, please do so.  We would love to have your help.

We recognize that citizens of the twenty-first century must be collaborative problem solvers who can work together with diverse populations, so Noddin prides itself in being an exemplary educational model. Our school culture and climate reflect our ability as a school community to work and learn together and collaboratively provide the opportunity for excellence in public education for all.
